A True Human Being

The following is the short Dharma talk by Daehaeng Kun Sunim that Marcus mentioned in the previous post.

A True Human Being

Our true mind is a great brightness that can lead us all.
This one mind, this one point
is the foundation of the Earth,
the foundation of the sun,
and the foundation of the universe.
With perfect wisdom it accepts everything and responds accordingly.
It is brightness itself,
what could possibly hinder it?

Although this brightness is in everything,
people create divisions and labels,
and then let those rule their lives.
How could they not be hindered
and oppressed in all the things they do?

A true person is the same as a Buddha.
However, let go of even the desire to become such a person,
as well as the fear of not achieving this,
instead, take everything that arises from this empty place,
your inherent foundation,
and return it to this empty place.
If you entrust it there with sincere faith,
and are relentless about this,
then from that place, your true mind will reveal itself.

In this true mind,
a Buddha’s mind and an unenlightened being’s mind
are not separate,
there’s no clean or dirty, high or low,
nor the least hint of “I did” or “I know.”
This true mind,
this completely empty bowl,
manifests every instant,
and brightly shines upon all,
with hands that aren’t hands, feet that aren’t feet,
on the path that isn’t a path.
This is the mind of a true human being.

  1. THANK YOU Daehaeng Kun Sunim

    Thank you Chong Go Sunim
    Thank you Marcus

… this text ‘is brightness itself’

    deeply grateful
    Evelyn

  2. “…take everything that arises from this empty place,
    your inherent foundation,
and return it to this empty place.”

I never get tired of reading this.

  3. did you put sunflower picture on purpose, or it just felt right? Sunflower has complex mathematical structure, also it consists of many little flowers together,- it is a Dharma in itself.

“…let go of even the desire to become such a person,
as well as the fear of not achieving this…”
this is same as: “…when there is no hope and no fear…”-from Tilopa’s Mahamudra Upadesha

No hope and no fear – the middle between somewhat bipolar swing, the middle which is not the flat median, but the reliance on inherent foundation

“entrust with sincere faith” – untill it is natural like breathing, untill it is a continous flow which does not go anywhere

    These are my beautiful jewels

    1. Hi Tanya,
I was searching through my hard drive for photos that would go with the post, and that one just seemed right. I’d forgotten about the little flowers that make up a sunflower.

  4. Thank you Chong Go Sunim!

    I love this:

“Although this brightness is in everything,
    people create divisions and labels,
and then let those rule their lives.
How could they not be hindered
and oppressed in all the things they do?”

I remember last year when you came to Thailand Sunim. After your talk I was chatting to one of the Littlebang Sangha members here called Andy and we were talking about the Korean community in Bangkok and how popular the Korean churches are. Andy said, and I remember it well, “and we all share the same Buddha-nature”.

He really demonstrated to me in that short exchange how, if you can put down the divisions and labels and open up to that brightness that can lead us all, the world suddenly becomes a much more beautiful place in which we are all really working together as one – “on a path that isn’t a path”.

    Shine on!

  5. Sunim, Marcus,

Beautiful! And I can’t help but wonder about the path that can lead those that can’t quite see the brightness, to the brightness itself! And at the same time accept their own ways, regardless.

  6. Thanks. Am I going to go on the path that isn’t a path……
Sunim…. According to Dae Haeng Kunsim, I’m okay…..
    You mean that…Thanks.

  7. Hi Ami!

It’s so great that you are here! Wonderful!

And yes, you made me think… you are right… we ARE okay! And this IS a path that isn’t a path! I mean, all we need do is let go and watch right?! Superb!

All the best Ami – it’s great to hear from you again!

    Marcus (Seok Jeong)
